Chambres d’Hôtes & Gites
Doug and Deni Ibbs purchased Chez Jallot as a ruin in 2003 (as can be seen from the photos). Their massive effort to restore this wonderful old 18th-century manor house to its former glory was initially shown on UK TV's Channel 4 Grand Designs Abroad Series in 2004.
Kevin McCloud, Grand Design’s presenter once said;
"This is the largest project I think I've ever visited, taken on by a couple almost single-handedly. Every time I've visited, I've been more and more blown away by Doug and Deni. They've proved that through sheer dogged optimism it's possible to tackle almost anything. And what I have learned is that building abroad isn't about filling in forms or learning to speak the language fluently. It's about waking up every morning and reminding yourself what it was that inspired you to come here in the first place.”
For a revisit in 2006 by the Grand Designs team, they were able to present the finished house but even then there were still many other areas that needed serious attention such as the barn attached to the house.
In 2014 Grand Designs visited again for an unprecedented third time, for a 10-year update. It was impossible to show all the changes in a 1-hour television programme, so Doug and Deni put together a book to tell the full story of the restoration and to share the experience of being part of that now well known UK TV series and one which has been shown all over the world. Most guests who have stayed at Chez Jallot seem to have seen the programme
In their book they have included dozens of photographs, including several black and whites to help bring to life the history of Chez Jallot. There are pictures of the house as they found it, work in progress and of course all the rooms as they pretty much are today.
The book tells their story from the early days through to completion of the restoration. It gives away some of the secrets of the build, the filming process and life in this beautiful area of France. It can be ordered online direct from Doug and Deni or you can pick up a copy if you are visiting as a guest to Chez Jallot.
